Design Students Cultural Journey Through Izmir's Historic Kemeraltı District

Students in Dr. Emre Yıldız's GD303 Editorial Design course recently embarked on a cultural expedition through Izmir's vibrant Kemeraltı district, exploring the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and modern creative practice. The curated route took students deep into the heart of Izmir's artisanal heritage, where they encountered master bookbinders and explored traditional paper shops alongside specialty material stores.
A highlight of the journey was the exhibition "Sometimes Their Shadows Fall Inside" at Hayy Open Space, where curator Saliha Yavuz's intimate showcase of artists' notebooks offered students a rare glimpse into private creative processes. The educational adventure culminated with visits to two significant cultural landmarks sharing the same historic garden: the stunning St. Vukolos Church Cultural Center and the historical Izmir Press Memorial House.
